I was once asked by a Non-Linear Editing trainee: “So do you give all the knowledge and “trade-secrets” that you just gave me now to every other trainee?”. I said: “Yes”. So he said: ” You should not tell everything to everyone, because then everyone will know everything!!!” …
WOW!!! … He left me speechless!!!
My answer to him, and my true belief in life, was/is that I can not feed anyone with knowledge, I can only guide him/her to see things better, and to know where to look for info on his/her own! How good any filmmaker may become is something that totally depends on him/her!
A good example would be new editors depending on manuals and tutorials, if they are good enough then will reach the target result, maybe in a longer time and with lots of trials-and-errors in the process, but they will, eventually, reach their goal!
My training totally depends on how eager my trainees are, how enthusiastic they are, and if they have real well to really be editors/filmmakers, not just employees!
With all that in mind, I have carried out many training courses, which eventually resulted in some great editors/filmmakers who make me feel not only proud of their achievements, but also that it was truly worth it!
